Geology
The Pioneer Valley was created by the breakup of the supercontinent Pangea along the Mid-Atlantic ridge during the Mesozoic Era. It took millions of years for the river valley to form. There are basalt flows and dinosaur tracks throughout the valley, especially along the Connecticut River in layers of rock deposit laid down by the river.
